The Edakkal cave is on the crest of Ambukuthimala or Edakkalmala, one of the prominent hills of Wayanad belonging to the Western Ghats. Edakkal literary means 'a stone in between'. This prehistoric rock shelter formed naturally out of a strange disposition of three huge boulders, that makes a two-storeyed natural cleft. The interior of the lower storey is of 18 feet in length, 12 feet in width and 10 feet in height. The interior of the other one is about 96 feet long, 22 feet wide and 18 feet high.The big opening at the right-turn corner of the roof allows enough light into the cave.
